Our practice is located in Baltimore and Ocean City, Maryland USA, and serves two distinct sectors and clients:

Exceptional design is a delicate balance between creativity and practical constraints. Our design approach is rooted in an understanding of the specific needs and desires of our clients, as well as the physical, commercial and cultural characteristics particular to each project and site. By pursuing ideas that respond to these unique conditions, we strive to create architecture and places that are authentic, innovative, meaningful and enduring. As such, every project we design is a one-off with its own identity.
Our work is the result of a personalized and highly collaborative design process alongside each discerning client. Our projects seek to provide a human-scale with balanced proportions, efficient planning, memorable compositions, sustainable and healthy building practices, and fine materials sensitively curated and detailed.

Tony has 39 years of experience as an architect, planner, designer and leader. His projects range from custom homes and villas – to iconic mixed-use developments, shopping centers, office, multifamily residential, hotels/resorts – to large-scale masterplans with complex issues. He has delivered innovative, leading solutions for projects throughout the U.S. and across the globe – having designed projects in Dubai, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Hungary, Russia, South Africa, India, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Venezuela, Guatemala, Columbia and Ecuador. Many of those for repeat clients.
Before founding VAN VLIET architecture | design Tony spent his illustrious career with Development Design Group (DDG), an award-wining internationally recognized firm based in Baltimore. There he went on to serve as its President & CEO. In 2020 he was instrumental in strategically joining DDG with BCT Architects to launch BCT Design Group. Transition accomplished, he left to form his own design and consulting firm for the final chapters of his career.

Tony’s design-focused approach ensures the highest quality is achieved on all projects. With his significant experience and broad understanding of issues, he gives clients a balanced hands-on approach in a personalized, attentive working relationship. His designs are sensitive and responsive to their locality, taking influence from their social, economic, environmental contexts. He has a well-developed talent for understanding the client's vision and engaging those ideas and objectives with a well-balanced design strategy.
His involvement in projects covers the full spectrum of project delivery – from the initial meetings, planning, visioning and concepts – to leading the design and production team, through to full design realization. His consistent contact with clients ensures careful management of projects as they progress.
Tony holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Tulane University, an NCARB Certificate, is licensed in Maryland and Delaware, and is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). He is a graduate of Choate Rosemary Hall prep.
